Maxim-um Confusion

So I get a phone call, asking for me by name, on my line which is:

1. Unlisted
2. In my mother's name
3. NEVER given out to any companies/agencies

and the caller claims to be representing Maxim Magazine. When I asked where she got my number, she answered "Maxim Magazine". Knowing that Maxim does not have my phone number, I again inquired where they got my numbed and her reply was again "Maxim Magazine"...

After telling her that I did NOT receive maxim AT THAT NUMBER she hung up.

Now, I dialed star[*] 69 and got the number 800-362-0796... I've been trying to research that number but with no luck. So far, it will cost me between $60 and $250 just to find out who owns the number. $250 to find out who called MY phone.

I call out to the masses. If anybody has access to this information would you please email me any information you have. I dunno, maybe someone in your family is in law enforcement or is a private investigator? I could use a hand...

I have had the same 800.362.0796 number on my caller id at home. I somehow received MAXIM magazine for 3-4 months. I never subscribed to it - I also at the same time started getting STUFF magazine that I also did not subscribe to. That is all i have for you. BYE

Hmmm. I was the Gold level subscriber of Stuff and got the similar call. Did you get the setup a charge for 5 magazines, before they sent you the list to choose from. I was calm, but kept questioning them until they hung up. I was passed to the 'supervisor' too.

I did a google search and ended up here, for the same problem that you have. The bad part is that my husband is the one they are asking for and he's in law enforcement and can't do anything about the problem. They have called 5 times in the last two days, after hanging up on me 2 times, "Beatrice" finally talked to me asking for my husband, when I said that I wanted to find out what magazine subscription she was talking about, she hung up on me. Then called 2 more times tonight and hung up on me when I answered the phone. All that the mysterous 800-362-0796 number. I know that I subscribe to Stuff magazine, got it through a free offer. I'm going to check it out, find out more info and get back to you.

another google search, here.

i just got called, and my girlfriend answered the phone. a girl asked for me by my first name, and she handed me the phone. i said hello, and she said hello, and then it sounded like a cell phone getting disconnected and she was gone.

so i *69ed the number and googled it and it brought me here.

they have called before to ask how i was enjoying my subscription, but it was before i had recieved my first issue.

I keep getting calls from that number too, no idea who they are though, I never answer the phone, I screen them through my answering machine and they never leave a message.

I recently subscribed to a free subscription to Maxim and have been getting Stuff magazine for a couple months. No idea what they want and if they won't even bother to leave a message I guess I may never find out...

I, too, received a call from this number recently. I was online at the time and my internet ansering machine feature picked up the call. No message left, but there was the number, clear as day. My attempts to call it back also resulted in a busy signal. As others have stated, this is somehow tied the Maxim/Stuff/Blender; I managed to snag a free four-year subscription to the former two. Since then, I have received several calls. One was a message on the answering machine wanting to check on the status of my subscription. One I took as a live call - after listening to the sales drone's spiel about renewing my subscription I told her that I was already subscribed through 2008. She was taken aback and stammered out an apology before hanging up. End result of all of this? After the freebie subscription is up, I'm never subscribing to Maxim again.

I receive phone calls from this number 2-3 times a day. I have been getting issues of Stuff magazine, and I never even signed up for ANY kind of subscription, free, trial or full. I am a heterosexual female who has no reason to buy or look at such smut. Sorry guys, you can call me a crazy feminist if you want, but it just isn't my kind of thing.

Alright guys, I finally made some headway. I talked to someone a month ago and I told them that I was receiving the subscription and all was fine. They didn't call for a month. Then today, I got THREE calls from them, that DREADED 800-362-0796!!! I emailed Stuff magazine and I ripped them a new one, going off regarding the situation. They replied very nicely, explaining that they do not have my phone number on file and never solicit calls. But, they added, that subscriptions that are free or through other websites are handled through a distributor by the name of PUBLICATIONS UNLIMITED. They gave me a number, 800-267-2611, but all it does is ring and ring. I got my free subscription through discountmags.com and they mysteriously never have any customer service to help answer why my information was sold...I have sent 2 emails, none have been responded to. The funny thing is that I never gave out my number to these people...and I'm unlisted. So, I have no idea how they got my information. I'm still working on it...already filed a complaint with the donotcall.gov page and in the process of filing with the BBB. I'll update when I can again...JB

Playboy, not Maxim or Stuff.

OK, there are no dates on the previous posts, except for the first. It seems like months later. I found this blog through Google, like most others. 800-362-0796.

I have been getting these calls for about a month now, at least a couple of times a week. Since it comes up on my CID as Name Not Found, I often let the machine take it. Of course, there is never any message. I recently moved, and changed my address at playboy.com. Nothing unusual there. (I also moved 9 months ago, changing my address through playboy.com, and never had any of this at that address or phone number).

Finally, last weekend, I answered one. Here is a rough transcript of the conversation

Her: "Hi, may I speak with James please"
me: Speaking
her: "My name is Roxanne, and I am calling on behalf of Playboy which you subscribe to"
me: Yes
her: "First of all, are you receiving it and enjoying it?"
me: Yes
her: "I am going to send you a special bonus adult video, which I think you will find enjoyable ..."

Click - line went dead in the middle of her sentence.

That's why I thought it suspcious. Maybe nothing, but I am going to keep this record just in case.

BTW, I do subscribe to Playboy, have for a few years, full paid subscription.

They called again today, but I was out. Same number on the CID, no phone message.

Does anybody know what these folks are up to? I have a bad feeling.

TIA,

Jim

My last comment was over a month ago...around the beginning of October (the one above yours Jim)...and now, it's my most current post (11/28/04)...

I did so much research. I contacted the place where I got the Stuff subscription and they were adamant that they had nothing to do with this. I contacted Publications Unlimited and they claim that they have nothing to do with this. They said that everything was handled by Smartek Holdings company, but I can't find any information regarding them. I am so close to just paying the money to find out who owns this number. My gut feeling is that it's not a direct number, so we're going to be out of luck.

I'm going to give you guys my email address so if you find out any info, we can all exchange it. Fuzzybuni@yahoo.com I am convinced this isn't legit. I have received 3 calls in the last week alone, all hang ups as soon as I pick it up.

I have reported this number twice to the do not call list and am looking for more information before I report to the BBB. BTW, Jim, if you visit back here again, contact Playboy and find out who submitted your subscription to them (unless you did it directly)...JB

Here's from someone else that got calls from the same number. I googled because we've been getting calls from the same number. We have never subscribed to ANY of the magazines they sell! We don't even pick up the phone.

Here's their address, as well:

16120 U.S. 19 North
Clearwater Florida 33764
U.S.A.

OMG I thought I was going nuts..until i came across y'all.I just got a call from this number today. The rep talking"Ashley", asking by name for my husband or brother inlaw( both have the same name)but not a full name,so I was not sure which she wanted. I informed her that he was not here and then she stated that it was a curtisy call about his publications. When I informed her he did not recieve any publication here, this Ashley got irrate with me, and made a several suggestions with the undelying tone of accusing one of them of having an affair. When I asked her what she really wanted she
she said it was none of my business and would catch up with him later.
Now this is just screwed up. Me, I am finding a little humor to it cause she stated that I had no clue what he was up too....um oh hell yeah he's deployed. Anyway,
After reading all the posts here you all mean to tell me this is all over magazines????? We do not subscribe to any..
Geezzzz.. how do we stop crap idiots like this, especially one like the one who called me, and trying to make accusatations because I would not give or confirm his contact info.
Though I found her practice about laughable, I am sitting her imagining how many other men are gonna catch the frying pan upside the head when they get home, because some sleeze trying slam and spam magazines.

Wow, i thought I was crazy too! I'm not sure when the other posts were made, but it's 8.17.05 and i have been getting calls from this number over 5 times a day for the past 4 weeks! Again, if i try to call them back, fast busy signals. We do subscribe to playboy (subscribed directly) and to Maxim. If i knew it would stop the calls, I would cancel my subscription immediately, but it sounds like that wouldn't help. Noone has ever talked to us when we answer the phone, they just sit there and if we say anything, they hang up. it makes me very nervous that so many people are having this problem and there is no resolution to this. I also just filed a complaint with the donotcall.gov website. we'll see if they respond.

Same problem and the same way I found this website. My husband does subscribe to Playboy but through them directly. We have been receiving calls for months but even if we do pick up they hang up. We also have 800-272-2910 calling in addition to the other number. I tried looking them up and tracking them and ended up here.

Today is Sept. 10, 2005. I have been getting calls from 800.362.0796 almost daily for the past 3 months. If I answer the phone there is usually no one on the other end and it quickly disconnects.

However, tonight there was someone there. The man on the other end of the phone identified himself by only his first name and said he was employed by a company who was being paid to contact PLAYBOY subscribers as to whether the magazine was arriving on time. He then enquired if I was satisfied with the delivery of the magazine.

Since I had no idea who this REALLY was, I wouldn't confirm anything. I thanked him for calling. Suddenly there was a loud noise on the phone, he said something about "that was a motorcycle" and then we were disconnected.

I've googled this phone number and found this site as well as a number of others. I've also filed a complaint with the National Do Not Call Registry, www.donotcall.gov

If you aren't on the Do Not Call list, I would suggest adding your phone number to it. It has done wonders for me. This is the first time I've had a telemarketer violate it. And it feels great to report it too! ;-)

PLEASE FILE A COMPLAINT!!!! https://www.donotcall.gov/Complain/ComplainCheck.aspx I am sick of these calls too. I filed the complaint today. You have to be registered with the Do Not Call registry for at least 31 days before you can file the complaint.

Wanna hear something sick? I, like you all, Googled 800-362-0796 after dialing *69. There are posts out there from more than a YEAR ago. Hopefully if enough of us report the arses who are calling us, they will be stopped. Maybe even heavier repurcussion...?

Good advice. At the time, I wasn't on the DNC list, but I am now... I find it amazing that I still get posts every now and then from this.

At 9:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

1/29/06 I too have been getting two to three calls a day for the last few months from this number and they always hang up when we answer. We have been on the DNC list but that does not seem to be working. If anyone have figured out what to do please reply.

Same story as above - one note: If you make a complaint with Do Not Call - you get: Do not call complaints will be entered into a secure online database available to civil and criminal law enforcement agencies. While the FTC does not resolve individual consumer problems, your complaint will help the agency investigate the company, and could lead to law enforcement action.

Best suggestion - ignore the phone calls - they will eventually stop.

The last poster is absolutely right. I pretty much ignored them and havent recieved a call since my initial post.

As for these calls in general. Now, I act surprised they're looking for someone, and notify them I am a business. That usually ends the call right there.

May 3, 2006

I was getting calls from this number asking if I wanted Maxim and Stuff magazines. For some reason I have been getting both in the US mail, even though I never subscribed to either. When I asked who was calling, they refused to tell me. When I pressed further, they told me that I would be put on their "Do not call list" and was disconnected.

I am already on the Do Not Call list, so I filed a complaint. Soon after that I got a letter back from the DNC and the calls have stopped.
